Pharmacy service

What is Pharmacy First?

Pharmacy First Black Country ICB

Pharmacy First is a new NHS service that allows pharmacists to diagnose and treat certain common conditions, without the need for a GP appointment. This means you can get faster access to treatment for minor illnesses, such as:

  • Sinusitis (12 years and over)
  • Sore throat (5 years and over)
  • Earache (1–17 years)
  • Infected insect bites and stings (1 year and older) – Not occurred outside of UK
  • Impetigo (1 year and older)
  • Shingles (18 years and over) – Rash started within 7 days
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTI) in non-diabetic women (16-64 years)

Restrictions: Pharmacy First is available to people aged 1 year and over and you are unable to access the scheme if pregnant or breastfeeding.

How does it work?

  1. Book Online with your Local Pharmacy/Visit your Local Pharmacy/Referred by your GP Surgery
  2. Confidential Consultation: The pharmacist will conduct a private consultation to assess your condition. This may include asking about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications.
  3. Diagnosis and Treatment: If your condition is suitable for treatment under Pharmacy First, the pharmacist will diagnose it and prescribe the appropriate medication including antibiotics should you need them.
  4. Collect Your Medication: You can collect your prescribed medication directly from the pharmacy. If you do not pay for your prescriptions you will not need to pay for these medicines.
  5. After Your Consultation: The Pharmacy will inform your GP Practices of your consultation.
